Empleado público y lingüista angloirlandés. Durante el desempeño de numerosos cargos para el gobierno británico en Bengala (1873–98), Grierson realizó investigaciones pioneras acerca de las lenguas de Asia meridional, en particular de las lenguas indoarias. En 1898 comenzó a trabajar en los 19 vol. del Linguistic Survey of India [Estudio lingüístico de India] y pasó los 30 años siguientes publicando información sobre cientos de lenguas y dialectos. Su trabajo fue muy valioso; sin embargo, sus construcciones lingüísticas hipotéticas, tales como "rajasthani, "bihari y "lahnda, confundieron a la mayor parte de los no especialistas.
